A Morning Prayer to Start Your Day

The first minutes of the day often set its tone. A short prayer before the emails, the news and the rush can turn your attention to God and remind you that you do not face the day alone. Here are prayers and simple ways to begin.

A one-minute morning prayer

Good morning, Lord. Thank You for this new day and for the rest of the night. This is the day You have made.

I give You my plans, my worries and the people I will meet. Walk with me through every hour, and help me love well today. Amen.

How to pray in the morning

Morning prayer does not need to be long or formal. What matters most is turning toward God before the day pulls you in every direction. These simple steps take only a few minutes.

  1. Pray before you pick up your phone

Even one sentence of prayer before the first notification gives God the first word of your day, rather than your inbox.

  2. Start with thanks

"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24). Thank God for one specific thing -- sleep, breath, a person, a fresh start.

  3. Offer God your plans

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps" (Proverbs 16:9). Walk through your day with Him -- the meeting, the school run, the hard conversation -- and ask for His help in each.

  4. Pray for the people you will see

Name your family, colleagues, friends and anyone you are worried about. Asking God to bless them in the morning changes how you treat them by afternoon.

  5. Read one short passage

A psalm, a few verses from a Gospel, or a single verse to carry with you. Over weeks and months, small daily readings add up.

A morning prayer for the day ahead

Lord, before this day begins, I turn to You. You know what is waiting for me -- the tasks, the people and the surprises I cannot see yet.

Give me wisdom for every decision, patience for every interruption, and kindness for every person I meet. Keep me honest and calm, and let me notice You at work. Amen.

A morning prayer before work or school

Father, I am heading into a full day. Help me do my work well and with integrity, "as to the Lord."

Guard my mind against stress and my words against harshness. Give me focus, energy, and a good attitude, and bring me home safely tonight. Amen.

A morning prayer of thanksgiving

Lord, thank You for waking me up today. Thank You for breath, for a new start, and for mercies that are new this morning.

Whatever today brings, help me remember all You have already given me, and let gratitude set the tone for everything I do. Amen.

A morning prayer for my family

Lord, as my family starts the day, cover each of us with Your care. Go with us to work, to school and wherever we go.

Keep us safe, help us be kind to one another, and bring us back together this evening with grateful hearts. Amen.

"In the morning will I direct my prayer": Psalm 5 and starting the day with God

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.

Psalm 5:3 (KJV)

David wrote Psalm 5 while surrounded by people who opposed him. His mornings were not calm -- yet he made a habit of bringing his voice to God before anything else.

"Direct my prayer" carries the idea of setting something out in order, like arranging an offering or laying out a case. David did not just mutter a hurried word; he brought his needs to God deliberately. Then he would "look up" -- watching expectantly through the day for God's answer.

Jesus kept the same rhythm. After a long, crowded day of healing in Capernaum, "in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed" (Mark 1:35). If Jesus needed time alone with His Father at the start of the day, so do we.

Morning is not holier than any other time -- Daniel prayed "three times a day" (Daniel 6:10), and God hears you at midnight as readily as at dawn. But the start of the day is a natural time to set your direction. Even a few honest sentences, offered and then followed by watching for God through the day, can shape everything that follows.

Would you like a pastor to pray with you this morning?

If you are facing a hard day -- an appointment, a difficult conversation, or simply a heavy heart -- you can start a private voice call or chat before it begins. If a pastor is online, you are connected with them; if none is available, an AI prayer companion answers instead.

You might pray together for the specific things ahead of you today, and leave with a verse to carry through the day.

Bible Verses to Hold On To

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24 (KJV)

Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.

Psalm 143:8 (KJV)

O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

Psalm 90:14 (KJV)

A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.

Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

Common Questions

Why pray in the morning?

Praying at the start of the day turns your attention to God before other things crowd in. Scripture shows David (Psalm 5:3) and Jesus (Mark 1:35) praying in the morning. It is not required, but many Christians find it steadies the whole day.

How long should a morning prayer be?

As long as you have. A one-minute prayer prayed most days will shape your life more than a long prayer once in a while. Start small and let it grow naturally.

What if I am not a morning person or work shifts?

Pray at the start of your day, whenever that is. Daniel prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10). The point is to begin your day with God, not to pray at a particular hour.

Can someone pray with me before a hard day?

Yes. You can start a private voice call or chat on Pray with Christ at any hour, and your first call and chat are free. You are connected with a pastor when one is online, or an AI prayer companion when none is.

If mornings feel unbearably heavy most days, that can be a sign of depression. Please consider talking to a doctor -- see our prayers for depression too.

If you are in crisis, please contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline right away -- you can find a free helpline in your country. See also our Safety Notice.

Where would you like to begin?

Voice and chat are with a pastor when one is available, or an AI prayer companion otherwise.
